A short history: from hailing rides in San Francisco to self-driving bets and a delivery acquisition
This unit asks: What kind of company is Uber?
Founded in 2009, Uber changed CEO in 2017, went public in 2019 and several times swapped businesses for shares. Operating income improved every year from a $8.6 billion loss in 2019, turning positive for a full year in 2023.
On May 10, 2019, Uber listed on the New York Stock Exchange, meaning its shares began trading publicly. It raised about $8.1 billion.
In that same year, its operating loss reached $8.6 billion, the largest in the company's history.
It took four more years to post its first full year of operating profit.
Founded in San Francisco in 2009, with a new CEO in 2017
In June 2017, founder and CEO (chief executive officer, the person who runs the company) Travis Kalanick stepped down. In September that year, former Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi took over; by 2026 Khosrowshahi had been in the job for nine years.
