Slow Research Academy › Uber › Unit 7 “Management”, lesson 1
The team that took over in 2017, and who owns Uber today
This unit asks: What key decisions has this team made, and where has the money gone?
CEO Khosrowshahi took over in 2017, and every major decision since has been made under the current team. From 2026, pay is measured on adjusted earnings per share and non-GAAP operating income. Uber has one vote per share and no controlling holder; Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, a sovereign fund, is the only large shareholder with a board seat.
In September 2017, Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of the travel site Expedia, became CEO of Uber, replacing the founder who had resigned three months earlier.
Uber was not yet public then and was losing money from operations every year.
The IPO, the sale of its in-house self-driving unit and its first full year of operating profit all came on his watch.
The CEO took over in 2017; operations and autonomous vehicles sit with a president who joined in 2012
The CEO and the Chief Legal Officer were both hired from outside in 2017.
