Slow Research Academy › Uber › Unit 9 “Risks and What to Track”, lesson 3
Five numbers to read first next quarter, and what would change the judgment
This unit asks: What could change this business's profits, and what to watch next?
Segment profit ÷ Gross Bookings, revenue margin (different from take rate; break down its components), autonomous vehicle cities and partners, effective tax rate, and advertising growth: identify the current value, what a change means and the judgment each informs.
Each quarter, Uber's report has a segment note that lists Gross Bookings and segment profit for Mobility, Delivery and Freight.
Add up the three segments' profit and divide by the three segments' combined Gross Bookings, and you get one ratio.
In Q4 2024, that ratio was 4.99%.
First reading: segment profit ÷ Gross Bookings, up about 0.1 percentage point a quarter over the past six quarters
Each time a quarterly report comes out, first calculate one ratio. Add up the three segments' segment profit and divide by the three segments' combined Gross Bookings.
